MEET MARTYN

FOUNDER & LEAD COACH

Martyn has loved fishing for as long as he can remember. Growing up in County Durham, he spent every spare minute by the water with a rod in his hand, fly fishing at the Derwent Reservoir, though these days he enjoys a bit of everything. For him, fishing has always been more than just a hobby; it’s a way to switch off, slow down, and find a bit of peace.

TURNING A PASSION FOR THE OUTDOORS INTO A PURPOSE

After moving to the South Coast to study Outdoor Education at university, Martyn began a career dedicated to helping young people. He started out working in a secure training centre with young offenders before moving into secondary schools, where he worked his way up from a Higher Learning Teaching Assistant and eventually Alternative Curriculum Manager. He’s also been a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Manager for many years, helping countless young people achieve things they never thought they could.

Throughout his time in education, Martyn saw how many children struggled to connect with mainstream learning, not because they didn’t want to achieve, but because they needed a different approach. He knew that outdoor experiences could make a real difference, giving young people space to breathe, think, and build confidence. That belief inspired him to create Different Angle, a place where learning happens through doing, and where every young person feels understood, valued, and capable.

Anyone who meets Martyn quickly sees why students respond to him the way they do. He’s kind, funny, and completely genuine, one of those people everyone just gets along with. He has a natural way of connecting with young people and bringing out the best in them.

For Martyn, fishing is simply the tool,  the real goal is helping others see things from a different angle.

OUR TEAM

Different Angle is very much a family-run venture, and you’ll often see Martyn joined by his wife and children, each playing their own important part in making every session special. Freya shares her dad’s passion for angling and plans to follow in his footsteps by becoming a Level 2 Angling Coach.

Together, the team make sure that Different Angle isn’t just about fishing - it’s about connection, kindness, and creating a space where everyone feels they belong.

We’re growing the Different Angle family!

If you’re an experienced angling coach with a background in supporting SEMH children, or you share our passion for helping young people thrive through fishing - we’d love to hear from you.
